The biggest mistake plant managers make is scrapping industrial equipment that still has operational value. While scrap value is based purely on the weight and type of metal (e.g., $0.10/lb for steel or $3.00/lb for copper), "whole unit" surplus value is based on the equipment's utility. A functional VFD, motor control center, or stainless steel tank can often be sold for 3x to 10x its scrap weight value.
When to Scrap: If the equipment is severely damaged, obsolete, burnt out, or rusted beyond repair, its only value is in its base metals. In these cases, dismantling the equipment to separate the high-value non-ferrous metals (like copper windings in motors or stainless steel components) from the low-value steel casing will yield the highest return.
When to Sell Whole: If the machinery was working when decommissioned, is a late model, or contains highly sought-after parts (like Allen Bradley drives or Fisher valves), it should be sold to an industrial surplus buyer. Even if the main unit is broken, the internal circuit boards, breakers, and drives might be highly valuable to the MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operations) market.
The challenge for most facilities is that they have a mix of both: some junk scrap and some highly valuable surplus. Sorting it out takes time and expertise. That's where Scrap Metal Buyers comes in.
Because we operate both as scrap metal buyers and industrial surplus resellers, we evaluate your entire lot. We will pay you surplus value for the reusable items and premium scrap value for the rest, clearing out your facility in one clean sweep. You don't have to hire two different companies or guess what your equipment is worth.
