About Monel Scrap
Monel is a nickel-copper alloy containing approximately 67% nickel and 30% copper, with small amounts of iron and manganese. It was one of the first nickel superalloys developed and is still widely used for its exceptional corrosion resistance in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and alkaline environments.
Where Monel Scrap Comes From
Monel is used in marine hardware (propeller shafts, pump impellers, valve seats), chemical processing equipment, oil refinery components, and electrical/electronic components. Marine salvage, chemical plant shutdowns, and refinery decommissioning projects generate the largest quantities of Monel scrap.
Monel 400 vs K-500
Monel 400 is the standard grade (67% Ni, 30% Cu). Monel K-500 has added aluminum and titanium for higher strength and commands a slight premium. Both are identified by their non-magnetic nature and copper-nickel color.
