What Determines Aluminum Scrap Value?
Aluminum scrap price per pound is driven by four factors: the alloy grade, cleanliness (free of steel, plastic, or other metals), quantity, and current LME (London Metal Exchange) aluminum futures price. Clean, sorted aluminum always commands a premium over mixed or contaminated loads.
Aluminum Alloy Grades and Their Scrap Value
6061 and 6063 aluminum are the most common structural alloys and command the highest scrap prices because they are easy to re-melt and have consistent chemistry. These come from window frames, door frames, irrigation pipe, and structural extrusions.
Cast aluminum (A380, A356) comes from engine blocks, transmission cases, pump housings, and die-cast parts. It has a slightly lower value than wrought alloys due to higher silicon content, but large quantities from plant shutdowns or equipment teardowns are highly sought after.
Aluminum cans (UBC — used beverage cans) are one of the most recycled materials in the world. Baled cans fetch strong prices because they have consistent chemistry and are easy to process.
How to Get the Best Price for Your Aluminum Scrap
- Sort by alloy: Keep extrusions, cast, and sheet separate. Mixed loads get downgraded.
- Remove steel and iron: Steel bolts, inserts, and brackets reduce the aluminum value significantly.
- Remove plastic and rubber: Wire insulation, plastic brackets, and rubber seals must be stripped.
- Weigh before calling: Knowing your approximate weight helps us give you a faster, more accurate quote.
- Large loads get better rates: Truckload quantities (40,000+ lbs) qualify for premium pricing.
