Aluminum Scrap Price Per Pound — What Affects It
The LME aluminum price is the foundation of scrap aluminum pricing. As of August 01, 2026, LME aluminum trades at approximately $1.05–$1.15/lb. Scrap aluminum pays 50–70% of the LME price depending on grade and cleanliness — the spread covers processing, transportation, and mill margin.
Clean vs Dirty Aluminum
The biggest factor in aluminum scrap price is cleanliness. Clean, sorted 6061 extrusion pays $0.55–$0.75/lb. The same aluminum mixed with steel bolts, plastic, or other metals pays $0.15–$0.35/lb — a 50–75% discount. Sorting pays off.
Aluminum Grades and Their Values
6061 and 6063 extrusions are the most valuable common grades. Cast aluminum (engine blocks, transmission cases) is worth less because it contains silicon and other alloying elements that reduce its value to re-melters. Aerospace grades (7075, 2024) can command a premium with mill certifications.
