Understanding Steel Scrap Grades
Steel scrap is graded by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). The most common grades are HMS #1 (heavy melting steel, minimum 1/4 inch thick, maximum 5 feet long) and HMS #2 (lighter steel, thinner gauge). Shredded steel comes from auto shredders and is a premium grade due to its consistent density.
What Generates the Most Steel Scrap?
Plant shutdowns, building demolitions, manufacturing equipment teardowns, and infrastructure projects generate the largest volumes of steel scrap. We specialize in buying entire facilities — structural steel, equipment, pipe, and all associated metals in a single transaction.
Steel Scrap Pricing Factors
Steel scrap prices are driven by electric arc furnace (EAF) mill demand, which fluctuates with construction activity and manufacturing output. Prices are typically quoted per gross ton (2,240 lbs) or net ton (2,000 lbs) — make sure you know which unit is being quoted.
- Thickness matters: Steel under 1/4 inch is typically HMS #2 (lower price). Over 1/4 inch is HMS #1.
- Length matters: Steel must be cut to 5 feet or less for most scrap yards. We can cut on-site.
- Cleanliness matters: Steel with excessive concrete, wood, or non-ferrous attachments is downgraded.
- Volume matters: Truckload quantities (20+ tons) get better per-ton pricing.
