Platinum is one of the rarest and most valuable metals on Earth, approximately 30 times rarer than gold. It is prized for its exceptional catalytic properties, corrosion resistance, and high melting point (1,768°C). The current spot price for platinum is approximately $28–$32 per gram ($870–$1,000 per troy ounce), making even small quantities of platinum scrap highly valuable.
The largest source of recycled platinum is automotive catalytic converters, which contain platinum, palladium, and rhodium (collectively called PGMs — Platinum Group Metals). A single catalytic converter may contain 3–7 grams of PGMs. Other significant sources include jewelry (platinum rings, chains, and watches), laboratory equipment (crucibles, evaporation dishes, electrodes), industrial catalysts (petroleum refining, chemical production), and medical/dental applications.
Catalytic converters use platinum (along with palladium and rhodium) as a catalyst to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful emissions. The PGM content varies significantly by vehicle type, age, and manufacturer. Foreign vehicles (especially Japanese brands) typically contain more PGMs than domestic vehicles. We buy catalytic converters individually or in bulk — see our dedicated catalytic converter pricing page for specific serial number values.
Platinum scrap is priced based on purity and current market value. Jewelry is typically stamped with its purity (950 = 95% platinum, 900 = 90% platinum, 850 = 85% platinum). Industrial platinum (wire, gauze, crucibles) is often 99.9%+ pure and commands the highest per-gram price. For catalytic converters, pricing is based on assay results of the specific converter type. We use XRF analysis and fire assay to determine exact platinum content.
Platinum is often confused with white gold and silver. Platinum is denser (21.45 g/cm³ vs. gold's 19.3 and silver's 10.5), does not tarnish, and is stamped "PLAT," "PT," "950," or "900." White gold is actually yellow gold alloyed with palladium or nickel and plated with rhodium — it will show a yellow tint when the plating wears. Silver tarnishes black and is stamped "925" or "STERLING." If unsure, bring your items to us for free testing.
