Zinc is the fourth most-used metal in the world, with approximately 60% of production going to galvanizing (coating steel to prevent rust), 15% to die casting, and the remainder to brass production, chemicals, and other applications. Scrap zinc is actively recycled and maintains consistent market value driven by the London Metal Exchange (LME) zinc price, which currently trades around $1.30–$1.60 per pound for pure zinc.
Zinc die cast (also called Zamak or pot metal) is one of the most common forms of zinc scrap. It is used to manufacture carburetor bodies, door handles, cabinet hardware, automotive trim, and toys. Clean zinc die cast without steel inserts commands the highest price. Zinc sheet and strip are used in roofing, flashing, and battery casings. Zinc anodes (sacrificial anodes) are used on boats, pipelines, and water heaters to prevent corrosion of other metals.
Zinc die cast is non-magnetic, has a dull gray appearance, and is heavier than aluminum but lighter than steel. When scratched, it shows a bright silvery surface. It can be distinguished from aluminum by its greater weight and from lead by its lighter color and lower density. A simple test: zinc die cast will produce white powder (zinc oxide) when filed or ground, while aluminum produces silver-colored dust. Many items labeled "pot metal" or "white metal" are zinc die cast alloys.
Galvanized steel is regular steel coated with a thin layer of zinc for corrosion protection. While it contains zinc, it is priced as ferrous scrap (steel) rather than as zinc because the zinc coating represents only 2–5% of the total weight. Pure zinc items (die castings, anodes, sheet zinc) are priced at the significantly higher non-ferrous zinc rate. If you are unsure whether an item is solid zinc or galvanized steel, use a magnet — galvanized steel is magnetic, while solid zinc is not.
Automotive dismantling produces zinc die cast components (carburetors, trim, handles). Plumbing and HVAC work generates zinc fittings and galvanized pipe. Marine maintenance produces spent zinc anodes. Roofing and construction projects yield zinc flashing and gutters. Manufacturing facilities generate zinc turnings, punchings, and defective castings. Even post-1982 US pennies are 97.5% zinc with a thin copper plating.
